“The project’s biggest challenge was connecting to the facility’s existing leachate piping. Nothing seemed to line up the way it was supposed to, but the biggest win was witnessing our crew’s teamwork and innovation in getting everything connected and functioning correctly. The team was truly committed to getting the job done, and in the end, everything worked out perfectly,” Justin says.
The Dickinson Landfill project is particularly meaningful to many of our team members. While we all contribute to landfill waste, for many at Baranko, Dickinson is home, and this specific landfill is where their trash ends up.
“I live in Dickinson, so working here hits home for me. It impacts my own life because the trash I take out in the future will go to the site I’m working on now,” says Jett Ogren, who has been at the landfill for the majority of the project.
In fact, data from the North Dakota Department of Health shows that municipal waste at the Dickinson Landfill nearly doubled from 2006 to 2014, growing from over 24,600 tons to 49,100 tons. This upward trend has continued since then.

With just about two months left to go until completion, the next tasks on the list will be to bed the pipe with drainage aggregate before installing and then burrito-wrapping it with fabric. A sand drainage layer will also go on top. We can’t wait to see the end results!
